Traditional Music
Chancel Choir
The Chancel Choir welcomes all singers from high school through adults to lead music in the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service. The growing choir of 40+ singers is dedicated to good sacred music and a wide variety of musical styles: classical (all periods of sacred literature), spirituals, 21st century compositions, hymn-based, and psalms. In addition to serving at the 11 a.m. worship service, the choir sings at several special liturgical services throughout the year, and will perform a major work every year.
Rehearsals are 7 — 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday in Knox Hall Room 155. In addition, we rehearse at 10:30 a.m. before the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday mornings. New members will be greeted with assigned folders and robes and a great welcome from the choir members! There are different levels of musicianship within this non-auditioned choir from accomplished soloists to those who are still mastering the skills of singing. We have a special place for you to serve God through music! Everyone is welcome!
Chapel Choir
The 8:30 a.m. traditional service hosts a variety of traditional music ranging from the Chapel Choir to various soloists and instrumentalists. The Chapel Choir sings almost every week with a warm-up rehearsal at 8 a.m. Sundays in Knox Hall Room 155. Music is available in advance. This is a great place to start especially if you have a busy work schedule and cannot work in Wednesday evening rehearsals with the Chancel Choir.
Chancel Handbell Choir
This is a three octave adult bell choir that rehearses 6-6:55 p.m. every Wednesday before Chancel Choir in Knox Hall Room 155. It's easy on the ringers’ schedules who are in both choirs. They ring once a month in the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service and for special services. We recently expanded to five octaves. Bells are great rhythm instruments — you have to be able to count! They are also very musical instruments with a vast array of dynamics, musical styles, and sound techniques all the way from bell tower swings and mallets to martellatoes! It will be the most fun way you've ever served God through music!
Children’s Choirs
We have choirs for all ages! Having faith and serving God at an early age is important at Hyde Park. Children not only learn good music, they also have basic training to becoming good musicians:
- Rhythm in keeping the beat through simple rhythmic patterns and to count simple rhythms
- Concepts of high-low, loud-soft, fast-slow
- Note reading
- Hymns and Psalms
- Importance of being a part of a choir in attendance, behavior, sharing your talents, and the fun and joy or working together
The Alleluia Choir, (ages 4 — grade 1), directed by Elizabeth Roth, meets 5:15 — 5:45 p.m. Wednesdays in Knox Hall Room 150. Sometimes, they join with the Junior choir for anthems, special songs and roles in musicals; they sing at the 9:30 a.m. Sanctuary service on the second Sunday of every month during the school year. They also meet at 9:10 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month in Knox Hall Room 155 to warm up for worship.
The Junior Chime Choir (Grades 3-5), directed by Penny Walsh, meets 4:45 — 5:15 p.m. Wednesdays in Knox Hall Room 155. These chimers love to ring! They are trained in rhythm, note reading, playing together as an ensemble, and how to serve God through instrumental music. They perform at the 11 a.m. Sunday traditional worship service once a month, usually for the Prelude, and also accompany the Junior Singing Choir on occasion. Warm ups for these services is at 10:30 a.m. in Knox Hall Room 155.
The Junior Singing Choir (Grades 2-5), directed by Janna Vincent, meets 5:15 — 5:50 p.m. Wednesdays in Knox Hall Room 155. This choir sings at the 11 a.m. Traditional worship service on the second Sunday of every month during the school year, and occasionally joins with either the Alleluia Choir or the adult Chancel Choir for special anthems. In addition, they meet at 10:30 a.m. on the second Sunday of every month in the Chapel to warm up for worship.
The Junior Singing Choir memorizes hymns, chants psalms, plays rhythm instruments with their singing, prepares the music for an entire worship service once a year, presents a full-scale musical once a year, and learns how to be worship leaders. All children learn friendship and acceptance as a part of being in this choir and all are welcome with open arms!
