Despite the original goodness of God’s creation, human sin has corrupted the world. Our mortality is a reminder of our utter dependence on God. Having concluded a seven-week worship series on the creation story in Genesis 1, it is timely and appropriate for Ash Wednesday to focus on Genesis 3, which is the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Free will is a gift from God, but it also carries the possibility of sin and unhealthy choices. The Lenten season is a time for us to ponder our mortality and the reality that “we are dust, and to dust we shall return.” (Genesis 3:19)
