Shining the Light Ministries, our mission partner in Nicaragua, provides agriculture training and support to low income families in the area around Leon.Their focus is in three areas:

Gardens

  • We work in eight communities teaching techniques from basic gardening skills to Bio intensive methods that include cover crops, composting, natural fertilizers and pest control. We also have provided drip irrigation systems in many of the gardens. Currently, there are 145 gardens with two educational gardens. One is at the El Ayudante HCN and one is at a rural school. These gardens positively impact more than 7200 Nicaraguans.

Poultry

  • We work carefully in each community to select an individual eager to help themselves and their community. A needs survey and business plan is completed prior to starting a project. In one community, Felix manages and operates two 125-bird egg laying coops. This flock generates more than 1600 eggs per week. With your help we plan on adding coops to two communities this year.

Sewing

  • Five church communities participate in this ministry. Tapestry of Love founder Kathie came down two times and spent time training. Living Grace Ministries in Leon continues weekly training. Two Nicaraguans are the lead trainers. They are currently searching for a store front property to sell their products out of. In Fairbury, Illinois, their hand-made items are available at Tapestry of Love.

Here’s an excerpt from their recent newsletter:

Shining the Light Ministries and Asociacion Brillando La Luz de Cristo en Nicaragua are non-profits organizations which are serving God in different ways, our goal is to be able to reach people around the world with God´s word and show them the love of God in a practical way. We are very thankful to God for giving us the opportunity of serving him and serving his people in Nicaragua. We have finished the year 2020 and we have experienced many blessings and many challenges through this year, but every time we faced a challenge, we realized that Jesus is always at our side.
