Section Leaders and Greeters

Day: Sunday // How Often: Twice a month

Building Christian community within our worshiping congregation is vitally important as we encourage one another on the journey of faith. This new ministry seeks to offer genuine care and hospitality by noticing, giving personal attention and connecting with those who sit near during worship. Training and support will be offered in this ministry.

Healing Prayer Team

Day: Sunday // How Often: Monthly

This team receives training and support as they work in teams to pray with members of our church community who desire prayer. This typically takes place on the first Sunday of each month, in the Chapel following each of the worship services.

Intercessory Prayer Team

Day: Weekday // How Often: Weekly

This team supports the individuals and activities of our church as they spend time in prayer each week, interceding on our behalf. We are looking for individuals with the spiritual gifts of healing and mercy as they pray for those in our church and community.

Pew Bears

Day: Weekday // How Often: 2 – 3 times per year

Have you noticed those bears in the pews or have you received one? They bring joy and hope to many in lots of different ways. We need folks who can attach prayer cards on the bears with a ribbon and who can make sure there are plenty of bears in the pews (basic training provided.)

Prayer Shawls and Chemo Caps

Day: Saturday as a group; individually any time // How Often: Monthly

This group of friends gathers once a month to knit prayer shawls and chemo caps. When finished, each is blessed in one of our worship services and then given to those who are ill or recuperating, sharing the love and warmth of Christ.

Senior Adult Ministry Leadership Team

Day: Weekday // How Often: 2 – 4 times per year

When does a person becomes a “senior?” Some say 55 or 60 and others 62. We say if visiting our group blesses you, you are welcome! This team plans and coordinates all the group’s activities, including luncheon, outings, service projects and annual trips.

Ministry in this area requires a background check for adult volunteers.
Youth grades 7 — 12, are welcome to serve in many of these positions.

Children's Greeter

(Hyde Park or The Portico campus)

Day: Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings // How Often: One or more times per month. // (Youth grades 7 – 12 welcome to serve.)

Greet families arriving in the Wesley Center and assist them with the check-in process. Print and deliver attendance reports. Welcome guests and guide them through their visit. Print and deliver attendance reports.

Sunday Morning Coordinator

Greets children, families and Shepherds; work with the Children’s Ministries Team with programming. Can choose to work with preschool or elementary age groups.

Sunday Morning Tech Leader

(Hyde Park campus)

Day: Sunday, 9:30 or 11 a.m. // How Often: Monthly

Run Audio/Visual (A/V) elements during 30 minute Large Group time for elementary or pre-school students. Assist/coach older elementary children in A/V roles, too. Training provided.

Supply Team

(Hyde Park campus)

Day: Weekday or Weeknight // How Often: Weekly
Members of this important team support our shepherds and kids by working with the Children’s Ministries staff  to organize and distribute supplies for weekly programming and general supplies for the classrooms. This team works to also help organize and keep our supply room tidy and clean and from time to time may be “on call” to help purchase supplies for special events.

VBS Crew Leader

(Hyde Park campus)

Day: Weekday // How Often: Daily, 8:30 a.m. — 12:15 p.m., June 25-29

Be part of the fun and excitement of Vacation Bible School as you ‘shepherd’ a small crew of children through an incredible faith filled adventure. This is a favorite summertime tradition for kids (and those serving) and there is nothing else like it!

Note: Adult volunteers must pass a background check. Youth, rising grades 7 — 12, welcome to serve. Adult and youth must attend one training session.

Hold, comfort and play with babies and toddlers. Only paid staff changes diapers!

Sunday Morning Large Group Leader (Storyteller)

(Hyde Park Campus)

Day: Sunday, 9:30 or 11 a.m. // How Often: Monthly // Youth grades 9 – 12 welcome to serve)

Teach/present the Bible story in a large group format to preschool or elementary school  kids in a fun, engaging way and lead the children through our 30-minute Large Group Worship time (“kids church”). Kids are sitting with their Shepherds during this  time. Training, lesson script provided.

Sunday Shepherd (Sunday School Teacher)

Day: Sunday, 9:30 or 11 a.m., 5:30 p.m. // How Often: Monthly, Sub for Summer or serve twice/month, Aug. — May // (Youth grades 7—12 welcome to serve)

Teach/assist small group lesson for a group of 5—10 children. Choose to serve in the 3-4-K or Grades 1-5 age groups. Will have a co-leader or assistant serve with you. Teach children about God’s love and the joy of being a part of the church family. Training, lessons and supplies are provided.

General Administrative/Office Support

Serve with this behind-the-scenes job to help with tasks such as entering information from attendance sheets into database, processing reference/background checks and other general administrative tasks.

VBS Support Team

(Hyde Park campus)

Day: Weekday or Weekend, May, June or week of VBS // How Often: Daily, 8:30 a.m. — 12:15 p.m., June 25-29

If being a Crew Leaders isn’t your thing, or you can’t serve during the week of Vacation Bible School, there are still plenty of opportunities to be involved and help make VBS a great experience for the kids! Serve in a prep role in advance of VBS [Construction Team: design/build the Sanctuary set; Decorations Team: decorate spaces around campus] or help with a role the week of VBS; station rooms, hospitality, volunteer appreciation, snacks, photography and more.

Lead musical worship as part of Large Group time for elementary or preschool students, work with Children’s Ministries Team on song selection and ways to make musical worship engaging for children.

Wednesday Night Shepherd

Children's Ministries Mission Projects

Our Children’s Ministries seek to teach children and family about the importance of Missions and Outreach through various mission projects, such as filling backpacks with school supplies or preparing food bags for the homeless. Volunteers can assist with gathering supplies, teaching children or helping families complete the projects.

On Fridays at 10 a.m., the Super Stuffers meet to stuff inserts into bulletins for our Sunday worship services. This group primarily consists of older adults, but all are welcome!

Homeless Ministries

Hyde Park United Methodist provides support for those experiencing homelessness and lower-income families through a variety of programs:

Open Arms
This ministry serves breakfast to our guests each Sunday. Multiple opportunities are available throughout the week to gather food, prepare meals or interact with guests. Bike Repair
Sunday mornings from 8-10 a.m., members of our Bike Repair Ministry meet at the church to help repair bicycles for our guests. Bicycles enable those experiencing homeless and working poor to meet their transportation needs and a working, safe bicycle is vital. | More | Email the Rev. Cold Weather Shelters
When temperatures fall below 40°F in Hillsborough County, the county government declares a “cold night,” which mobilizes volunteer agencies, including Hyde Park, to open safe, warm space to protect those experiencing homelessness. | More | Email Don Aiken, church liaison, for more information.

Manna Bags
