Advent Details

The Christmas Letters: An Advent Invitation from the Epistles

This Advent, we’ll delve into the incarnation of Jesus through select epistles. We’ll connect these texts to Advent themes, gospel narratives, and writings of early Christian thinkers. Ultimately, this study invites you to observe a holy Advent and deepen your commitment to Jesus Christ. This Advent series is based on a book written by our very own The Rev. Magrey deVega.

December 1

Good News: Hope for Salvation

Romans 1:1-6 NRSV

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus brings us good news, offering us the hope of salvation. In Romans, we see God’s great plan to save all people from sin.

December 8

Love Incarnate: The Word of Life Revealed

1 John 3-4 NRSV

Jesus is love incarnate, the “word of life” revealed to us as a human of both “water and blood.” He shows us the way of love, which shapes our relationships with God and others.

December 15

Fully Human: Joy in Humility

Philippians 2:1-11 NRSV

Jesus emptied himself of his equality with God to become fully human. In doing so, he shows us a model for empathy, curiosity, and humility, which are keys to living a joyful life in Christ.

December 22

Fully Divine: Peace through Christ

Colossians 2:6-15 NRSV

In Jesus the full divinity of God “was pleased to dwell.” Therefore, through Christ, we can be at peace with God and we can live in peace with one another.

The Christmas Letters: Celebrating Advent with Those Who Told the Story First

By The Rev. Magrey deVega

You may or may not know the story of your birth. If you do, there is something special about hearing your origin story again and remembering how it all began for you. That’s why we observe Advent: to celebrate how it all began for us. In The Christmas Letters, Magrey deVega invites you to hear about the miracle of Christ’s birth from those who first told the story. The letters in the New Testament, known as the Epistles, contain the first attempts by the church to understand and celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation. They point us to the origins of what we believe about Jesus, fully human and fully divine. By spending time with these holy, ancient words this Advent, you’ll come to know the meaning of Christ’s coming like never before.

Parking for Christmas Eve

Christmas is one of our busiest days of the year, we are so excited to welcome many new faces to our church. In anticipation for the additional guests, we have partnered with a few of the local businesses to acquire more parking. As usual, we ask that you leave the spots closest to the building for people with mobility issues and guests. Click here to download a map detailing all the options for parking on Christmas Eve.

Hurricane Helene Response

October 4, 2024

Dear Hyde Park Family,

“Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine.

When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you.

When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down.

When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end—

Because I am God, your personal God, the Holy of Israel, your Savior.”

(Isaiah 43:1-3, The Message)

The devastation from Hurricane Helene is continually evident throughout our community. As the days go by, we hear stories of grief and loss, from those here in Tampa Bay and loved ones and friends as far away as Western North Carolina.

As I shared in a video shown in the in-person worship services last Sunday, the saying “things can be replaced” is helpful, but it falls short of calculating the true cost of a tragedy like this. Over this past week, many of you have been expending energy and time from depleted reserves, working hard to move forward. Those expenditures exact an emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual toll that cannot be replaced.

However, by God’s grace, they can be replenished.

The words of the prophet Isaiah remind us that God is with us, to replenish the energy required to make it through one more day, to cross one more thing off the seemingly endless checklists, and to wait just a little longer for the next step in a myriad of processes for recovery.

What is also with you is the presence of community, like this Hyde Park congregation, which has proven time and again to come together for mutual support, love, and encouragement.

If you are going through the difficulties of storm recovery, here is a complete and current status of our congregational response:

Online Scripture

Online Reading for 125th Celebration

We want to feature the online community in our worship services on Sunday, Sept. 15, You can be a part of the celebration by reading the scripture. We will feature all your voices in a creative way.

How to Participate

Record video of yourself or your family reading this Scripture.

Listen for the Word of God from Psalm 78, verses 1 through 7.
This reading comes from the New Revised Standard Version.

Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
     incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable;
     I will utter dark sayings from of old,
things that we have heard and known,
     that our ancestors have told us.
We will not hide them from their children;
     we will tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord and his might
     and the wonders that he has done.

He established a decree in Jacob
     and appointed a law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
     to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them,
     the children yet unborn,
and rise up and tell them to their children,
     so that they should set their hope in God,
and not forget the works of God,
     but keep his commandments;

The Word of God for the world.

Thanks be to God.

Helpful Hints for Parenting Your Child in Worship

Preparation before Sunday:

• Speak positively about the experience and let your child(ren) know you are pleased they will be joining you.
• Read Sunday’s Scripture together. During the week, begin discussing your family’s expectations for worship behavior and participation.
• Set out clothes, Bibles and other Sunday items the night before to give yourself some extra time on Sunday morning.

Helping Your Child(ren) Engage through Participation:

• Help them follow the order of worship in the online bulletin.
• Have children who can write complete the attendance and prayer forms.
• Let the children put the money in the drop safe in the Narthex.
• Encourage the use of the children’s worship activity bags (greeters will be passing out before the service begins) as a way to remain engaged in worship.
• Consider your child’s personality and look for unique ways to keep them engaged in worship.

We understand having your children with you in worship sometimes requires an extra helping of patience, but we hope you will see it as special opportunity to spend time with your child and share the experience of worship together. It is good for them to see you worship!

“Above all, pray for your children with thanksgiving. Ask the Lord to help you see your children through his eyes. Ask his help for patience, wisdom and strength to enjoy these kids! The creative giftedness that can make many Sunday mornings long can also make great saints in the long run.”

What crew is my child in?

A parent email will be sent the week before VBS to all parents of registered children with crew information. This email will also contain pick-up passes which must be shown to your child’s crew leader at dismissal/pick up each day.

How does drop off / pick up work?

Morning drop off: Campers should be seated in the Sanctuary with their crew by 9 a.m. for opening worship each day. Doors open at 8:50 a.m., please escort your child inside the Sanctuary to their crew’s pew and drop off to their crew leaders.

Afternoon pick up: Dismissal will start at 12:10 p.m. each day.* Children should be picked up from their crew pew in the Sanctuary.

*Note: rising 5th and 6th graders will have extended hours on Tuesday and Thursday with dismissal at 3 p.m. from the Magnolia building. Dismissal on Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be from the Sanctuary balcony at 12:15 p.m.

What does my kid wear to VBS?

Each day your child should wear their VBS T-shirt. T-shirts can be picked up each Sunday in June in the Courtyard from 9 a.m. – noon. T-shirts can also be picked up in the church’s Ministry Office 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Monday-Thursday. Shirts must be picked up by Sunday, June 23. If we have shirts left over, additional shirts can be purchased beginning Wednesday of VBS week (at the VBS info tent in the Sanctuary Courtyard. $5 each).

Please use a black Sharpie marker to write your child’s first name and crew number on the FRONT of the shirt. This will act as their nametag (Using a flat cardboard piece inside the shirt helps when you do this). We also suggest comfortable shorts and closed-toed shoes for their safety.

What if I can't pick up my child - can another parent, friend or grandparent pick them up?

YES, BUT THEY WILL NEED TO HAVE A COMPLETED PICK-UP PASS FOR YOUR CHILD TO PRESENT TO YOUR CHILD’S CREW LEADER. We are accepting pictures of completed Pick-Up Passes on smart phones as well. If your child’s pick-up person does not have a pass, they will be asked to go to our info tent outside in the Courtyard. They will need to show their driver’s license and we will check registration forms to see who has been authorized to pick up your child. If you did not list them as an authorized person to pick up your child in your child’s registration, we will call you to confirm authorization.

Will there be a 'VBS Recap Video' this year?

Yes! Join us for worship Sunday, June 30.

The Time Draws Near

Dear Hyde Park Family,

“The Birth of Christ”
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

The time draws near the birth of Christ;
The moon is hid–the night is still;
The Christmas bells from hill to hill
Answer each other in the mist.

Four voices of four hamlets round,
From far and near, on mead and moor,
Swell out and fail, as if a door
Were shut between me and the sound.

Each voice four changes on the wind,
That now dilate and now decrease,
Peace and good-will, good-will and peace,
Peace and good-will to all mankind.

Rise, happy morn! rise, holy morn!
Draw forth the cheerful day from night;
O Father! touch the east, and light
The light that shone when hope was born!

On behalf of the clergy, staff, and lay leadership of Hyde Park United Methodist, I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love,

The Rev. Magrey deVega
Senior Pastor, Hyde Park United Methodist
